PJSTA’s McMullan Responds to Newsday’s Propaganda

Those unfortunate souls who still read Newsday may have seen an editorial in today’s edition titled, “Stop the testing tug-of-war”.  Other editions seemed to have it titled “Don’t Slow Down the Common Core in New York”.  It was a real propoganda piece in which Newsday shilled for the Common Core.  The PJSTA’s Melissa McMullan penned a response.  Diane Ravitch published it on her blog today.  Here is McMullan’s reply…

In response to “Stop the testing tug-of-war”

Upset is not the word. As a teacher, as a mother and as a taxpayer, I am filled with disgust. Let’s speak of facts from people who are in the system, rather than the hypotheses of those (the media and corporations) on the outside.

1.    The “standardized tests” do not track year-to-year progress of a student. No teacher knows what students mastered, and what they did not. Last year’s assessment tested students on materials that were not available until after the assessment. It contained proprietary material that the test’s maker, Pearson, includes in curricular materials that it sells to school districts – giving purchasers an unfair advantage on the test. Next, the test’s outcome was predicted by the Commissioner weeks before the tests ever made their way to schools for administration. Finally, in the six years I have administered the assessment to my students, I have personally observed ten point swings between passing and failing – depending upon how the state wanted schools and teachers to be perceived by the public.

2.    The state teacher evaluation system (APPR) will find few teachers ineffective because the majority of the score (60-80%) is derived from local measures – observation, lesson plans, parent communication, etc…. The state gave me a 1 out of 20 for my growth score for last year. If the state’s portion were used as my only evaluative tool, I would have been considered ineffective. I could accept a 1 out of 20, if the state could tell me what I did well, what I did not and which portion of that score was for my math instruction of 60 students, and which portion was for my English Language Arts (ELA) instruction of 30 students. No one has this information.

3.    Standards-based evaluations have yet to be seen. During my years in business, I had objectives I was required to meet. Each year, I sat down with my supervisor and we discussed those I had met, those I had not, and how to improve. In this system, we give students assessments that have no standardized bar to pass. After they take the assessment, their teachers and parents never know what standards they have met, and which they have not.

4.    The curricular materials were not available last year. This is true. This fall, the state released materials. The math modules availablefor my sixth grade class required me to spend two hours per day modifying them in order to eliminate spelling and grammatical errors, replace a 10-point font with a 14-point font that young children can read and see, as well as define ways to bridge gaps between what my students were able to do, and the skills they needed to have to get through the lessons. Furthermore, the first unit was comprised entirely of lengthy word problems that my students, who are reading several years behind, were unable to read.

As a mother and a teacher I ask for:

o  Assessments that measure state standards, with consistent benchmarks for passing to track progress over time.

o  Item analysis for parents and teachers so both parties know what students have mastered and what they have not.

o  A state growth score that tells a teacher what his /her students mastered, and what they did not.

Until those three requirements are met, my own four children will not participate in the state’s fraudulent assessment system that drains valuable resources from cash-strapped school districts, promotes growth for corporations like Pearson and in its lack of transparency, erodes the teacher-student relationship.

Sincerely,

Melissa McMullan

Arrogant Cuomo Doesn’t Care What New Yorkers Think

I don't care what research says! You'll do what I say... and you'll like it!
I don’t care what research says! You’ll do what I say… and you’ll like it!

In his State of the State address, Andy “Lobbyist for Students” Cuomo chose to completely ignore the growing revolution by students, parents, and educators over his education reform agenda.  Rather he doubled down on his efforts instead, proposing a merit pay system that would pay “highly effective teachers” a $20,000 reward.  The same merit pay system that has, time and again, failed to work anywhere it has been tried.  No mention of the bungled implementation of the Common Core State Standards.  No mention of how deeply flawed those standards are.  No mention of the obscene amounts of testing being used to torture students.  No mention of the disastrous APPR system that he’d want to base these “bonuses” on.

To make it perfectly clear, Governor Cuomo chose to use his most visible platform of the year to completely ignore the concerns of New Yorkers across the state. Instead the message he sent was, “I don’t care what concerns you have.  I am King Andy and we will continue to jam this ill conceived agenda down your throats!”

Of course Cuomo/Tisch puppet John King thought Cuomo’s idea was wonderful.  “We certainly support rewarding highly effective teaching. We know there’s an opportunity to identify teaching practices and allow them to be mentors for their colleagues.” King said.

Over at Perdido Street School, Reality-Based Educator had a great idea (emphasis mine)…

The revolt over Common Core, the Endless Testing regime, inBloom and APPR is not going to go away just because Sheriff Andy ignored it and made as if it doesn’t exist.

If anything, Sheriff Andy threw more kindling on the revolution bonfire by doubling down on the agenda with a merit pay proposal based upon test scores.

The key now is to have people ask him at every campaign stop he makes in 2014 why he refuses to listen to students, parents and teachers on education issues, why he refuses to acknowledge his APPR evaluation system is an unworkable mess, the CCSS implementation has been nightmarish and every other state dropped out of inBloom so why is NY State still in it?

Put him on the spot every day of his campaign for re-election, that’s the goal here.

Still, if some students, parents and teachers show up at every Cuomo campaign appearance around the state protesting his education reform agenda (one which he won’t defend publicly anymore – he just continues to implement it), the press will notice, as will his GOP opponent, and eventually he will have to take a public stand on this stuff himself.

The point is to make him pay a political price for his refusal to listen to criticism and opposition to his agenda.

He wants to run up the score in his 2014 re-election bid in order to set up a 2016 White House run.

He got some help yesterday when Chris Christie’s chances of getting elected got stuck on traffic outside the GWB.

But students, parents and teachers angry over his education reform agenda can put a crimp in Andy’s re-election campaign this year by putting him on the spot over it.

That should be part of the movement against CCSS, APPR, inBloom and testing going forward – continued pressure on the politicians in Albany, especially Governor Cuomo.

Over at the B-LoEdScene Blog, Sean Crowley writes that Cuomo Promises Edsels, New Cokes, and 8 Track Players to Highly Effective Teachers.

The esteemed Diane Ravitch writes, Cuomo Supports Failed Ideas of Corporate Reformers.

Who is it Gonna Be?

Via Newsday

Diane Ravitch, the outspoken education historian, policy analyst and author, called on educators across Long Island Tuesday to boycott Common Core-related curricula and refuse to administer state tests as an act of defiance against the state and federal governments.

“Your community is your boss, and you do what’s best for children,” said Ravitch, speaking at a Hauppauge meeting that drew about 175 school superintendents and administrators from Suffolk and Nassau counties.

“Do not take the Common Core tests. Stop the testing,” said Ravitch, of Southold, who wrote the critically acclaimed “Reign of Error,” which defends the American education system and criticizes privatization moves as a drain on public schools. “Neither teachers or students are prepared for these tests. Stand together and there will be no punishment.”

This idea has been bubbling for some time now.  Just waiting for the right person to put it out there.  There is no better person to suggest the idea than Diane Ravitch.  This is the year to do it.  It is the perfect storm.  Parents will be refusing in droves.  Teachers are finally feeling emboldened enough to speak out about the reforms that are killing their school.  It’ll be the spring of an election year.  Legislators wouldn’t dare impose consequences on a district (or districts) who boycott the tests as a way of protecting the children in their communities.  We’ve already seen the governor in an all out sprint, attempting to distance himself from the reform agenda.  All it will take is for one school district to take the courageous step.  To say, “No.  Not to our children.  You will not continue to abuse our children.  No state testing in our schools this year.”  Middle Country School District Superintendent Roberta Gerold was quoted in the Newsday article saying, “I would really have to think about it.  I would love us to have the courage.”

Once a district takes that step others will follow.  At that point the entire reform agenda crumbles.  So now the question is, who?  Who is going to be the courageous first district to take that step?  Whoever it is will have the strength of all of our state’s teachers and an enormous number of parents behind it.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has a group of people (also see here) whose job is to dig up dirt on Diane Ravitch (a friend of ours) and discredit her.

The Port Jefferson Patch’s article on Saturday’s rally.  Be sure to watch the accompanying video to see our beloved president!

NYSUT’s story here.  Their photographs here.

Another rally story, this one from longisland.com, including a quote from Dimino.

What many of the rally stories seem to miss (or ignore) is the fact that these assessments really were never meant to assess students.  Instead they are all part of the rigged game to destroy public education.  Just ask John Merrow, who can’t get the real story of Michelle Rhee published.

On a separate note, we have discussed the need to contact our elected officials who do not support us (particularly John Flanagan and Ken LaValle).  In addition to this you should be contacting politicians who have supported us to express your gratitude as well.  When calling Assemblyman Englebright and Assemblyman Graf today to express my gratitude for their support at Saturday’s rally I didn’t get the sense they had heard from many people.  They each had staff members who spent 10-15 minutes each on the phone with me, however.  They wanted to know my experience as an educator dealing with the destructive “reforms” that have entered our profession recently.  The idea that legislator’s would want an educator’s opinion on education issues shouldn’t have been surprising.  But it was.  It was refreshing too.  They should hear from all of us.  When they take our fight to Albany they need to know that they have an army of us behind them.

Everyone thinks John King should resign!… and other assorted notes

Our friend Diane Ravitch today called for the resignation of New York State Education Commissioner John King.  Citing the harm King has done to children and educators, Ravitch is calling on all concerned parents, educators, and citizens of New York State to contact the New York State Board of Regents to demand the resignation of John King.  Regent Roger Tilles represents Long Island.  Merryl Tisch is the chancellor at large.  Tell them how you feel about the harm done to your students, your own children, and your profession.

Here is one teacher’s letter.

KYF- Diane Ravitch

As mentioned a few weeks ago, thepjsta.org would soon be debuting two new series on our blog.  Today we bring you the first installment of our series “Know Your Friends” (KYF).  In this series we will highlight individuals and groups who are friends of public education.

Any list highlighting the friends of public education must start with the incomparable Diane Ravitch.  Ravitch is a historian of education and Research Professor of Education at New York University.  She served as Assistant Secretary of Education and Counselor to Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993, under President George H. W. Bush.  She has authored several books, including The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education.

Diane Ravitch

Over the course of the last several years Ravitch has been an outspoken voice against the privatization of public education and all that it entails.  She has used her platform as well known figure on the national stage to defend teachers and argue against the various “reform” measures that have been put in place to try and destroy the industry that we have made our livelihoods.

Ravitch’s blog has become a must read for educators at every level.  It is something that you should be reading on a daily basis as she highlights many of the important education stories happening around the country.  Over the course of the last year this blog has linked to hers on many, many occasions.  For a PJSTA member who has not been well read on this subject matter, it will help you to begin to understand the scope of what we are up against, as well as help you find ways to network with others around the country.  If you take education into account when you go to the polls every November, you will learn a great deal about where many politicians stand just from reading Ravitch’s blog.

Below is Ravitch speaking on corporate education reform.
